Benefits Expected?: Muscle Recover, Target Key Pressure Points, Release Muscle Tension And Discomfort

We all get back pain, and the common reason for this is that many of us have lousy posture habits caused by constantly being on our phones or sitting at our computers with slouched backs. This could be exacerbated by heavy training or long runs. As a result, we often suffer pain and tension in different areas of our backs. The Chirp Wheel is a device that aims at helping us reverse this negative trend, so let’s review it…

The company claims that anyone can benefit from using a Chirp Wheel, especially athletes who want to stay loose and mobile. The device is meant to help you roll your back and improve lumbar flexibility.

After seeing an ad that popped up on Facebook, it certainly looked enticing. As a calisthenics athlete and coach, I often lack flexibility and get very tight back muscles. So, I decided to buy one and see if it lived up to my expectations. Read on as I will show you everything you need to know about the Chirp Wheel in this hands-on Chirp Wheel review.

What is The Chirp Wheel?

The Chirp Wheel is a quick and efficient device that helps alleviate back discomfort with just a simple roll. It’s a foam roller shaped like a wheel that fits between your shoulder blades to reach muscle knots along your spine. It has a little grove in the middle which acts as a spinal canal, giving you a comfortable experience instead of putting pressure on your spine.

Foam rolling is thought to improve muscular performance and flexibility as well as to relieve muscle fatigue and soreness. Another term for this is myofascial release. According to a 2021 study, self-massage may accelerate the healing of the muscle by increasing the circulating neutrophils.

Chirp Wheel Unboxing

The Chirp Wheel Bundle I purchased was ‘The Ultimate Back + Neck Bundle”. There are two color options, all black and turquoise. I chose the latter. What’s included in this bundle are:

  • Chirp Wheel+ 4 Pack
  • Chirp Wheel Case
  • Upper Back Posture Corrector

The Chirp Wheel comes in different sizes for different needs. The Gentle 12” Wheel provides gentle pressure and a deep stretch in your spine. Perfect for beginners or those who have a sensitive back.

The Firm 10” Wheel provides medium pressure to massage tight muscles in your back. The Deep Tissue 6” Wheel provides deep tissue triggers around your neck, spine, and shoulder blades. The Focused Pressure 4” Wheel massages the muscles in your neck and focuses on deep muscle knots in your back.

Chirp Wheel Features

The Chirp Wheel is surrounded by this nice soft, black padding. It’s made with durable skid-resistant half-inch sweat-resistant foam padding, a soft EVA compression, and a sturdy PVC-free ABS plastic core that withstands the weight of 500 lbs.

Every Chirp Wheel is also five inches wide, so when you compare that to a foam roller, you can see why the chirp wheel targets the back muscles much better. Not only is it narrower than foam rollers but it also has the spinal canal in the middle allowing for a comfortable massage along with the sides of the spine.

The Chirp Wheel deserves to be in every home as it’s a great product for back pain relief and back stretching. The company also offers a free Chirp Wheel Case so that your brand-new wheels can stay newer for longer. The case is built to store your Chirp Wheel+ 4 Pack. This makes traveling with the wheels easier so you can have access to back pain relief wherever you go.

It features an adjustable carrying strap. You can carry them on your shoulders, hang the bag on a hook, put it in a cupboard, place it under a table, or leave it out for the world to see. There’s also a little bit of extra space inside the bag to put your posture corrector, phone, wallet, and keys without having to find another bag to store them in.

The Upper Back Posture Corrector is designed to help correct, maintain, and remind you to practice good posture – shoulders pulled back, and chest muscles stretched out. The straps are padded on the back and shoulder area to provide a comfortable posture corrector.

Instead of Velcro, the adjustable back posture corrector uses buckles for easy adjustment and secure fit. No need to rely on other people to help wear and take off the posture corrector as the straps and buckles are accessible from the front.

Chirp recommends wearing the posture corrector for 30 minutes a day when starting. Then, gradually increase the time the back brace is worn. Don’t use it while exercising, but rather after a workout instead.

When the Chirp Wheel arrives at your door, it comes with a user manual that is easy to follow. It shows you how to use the wheel with pictures, size guidance, and other uses. I’m impressed with this because a lot of stuff I purchase online comes with unclear instructions.

What I Don’t Like About The Chirp Wheel

Rolling over the Chirp Wheel can be initially uncomfortable and not easy especially if you’re not used to foam rolling. It’s a well-built product but not designed for big people. If you are a bigger individual, it can be difficult to keep on the spine without it rolling to the sides.

The foam compresses and your back makes contact with the exposed edge of the base material, a rigid PVC pipe section. This contact can be quite painful, combined with the short length of the product. It is quite hard to roll to the top of your back and neck, I think it can be dangerous due to the height (unlike foam rollers), it puts pressure on the neck and one wrong slip could be fatal.

Lastly, I’d like to call out the exaggerated ads I saw. Seeing videos of people easily and gleefully cracking their backs rolling over these, I wanted that experience for myself also. I did experience some minor cracks, but a lot of people I saw in the reviews section did not experience any cracks or relief.

How To Use Chirp Wheel

If you’re ready to roll your discomfort away and target key pressure points in less than 5 minutes a day, I’ll show you how. The New York Mag pointed out that the Chirp Wheel hels pop the vertebrae like a bubble wrap. There are three stages to using the Chirp Wheel:

Sit and Lean Back

  1. Sit on the ground with knees bent and feet firmly planted.
  2. Place the Chirp Wheel Against your back in alignment with your spine
  3. Lean back gently to transfer your weight to the wheel. Relax in this position before lifting your hips.

Lift Hips

  1. Rest your hands on the ground, the wheel, or your chest for balance.
  2. Lift your hips upward while relaxing your back.
  3. Don’t tense up! The more you relax your back, the better it will feel.

Roll Back and Forth

  1. Begin to roll back and forth on the wheel by bending and straightening your legs. Use your hands for balance.
  2. Roll out for 3-5 minutes. Length preferred use will vary by individual.

Chirp Wheel Buying Process and Shipping Process

The purchasing process of the Chirp Wheel was easy and swift. I purchased it on my iPhone using Apple Pay, it took less than five minutes. I received updates on the shipping for when my Chirp Wheels will be delivered. As I live in London, it took 10 days for me to receive it through the post.

Chirp Wheel Weight Limit

The Chirp Wheel can withstand a weight of up to 500 lbs. They come with a padded spinal canal to cushion your back delivering pressure to muscle knots and tight areas.

Chirp Wheel+ Exercises

The Chirp Wheel works wonders for your back pain relief, but there’s more to it than just rolling out your back on the wheel. You can use the Chirp Wheel as part of your training for an extra challenge and full-body workout. Here are four exercises you can do to increase your strength.

1. Knee Tucks

Muscles worked: abs, obliques, hip flexors, shoulders, triceps

  1. Get down on your hands and knees with the wheel between your feet.
  2. Slowly place one shin at a time on top of the wheel. Do this step carefully as it takes much practice and patience for the wheel not to fall over.
  3. Once you have both shins on top of the wheel, engage your core muscles to pull your knees toward your chest as the wheel rolls forward.
  4. Roll the wheel back again with your legs until it rests on your shins again.
  5. Repeat 3 sets of 10.

2. Plank

Muscles worked: abs, obliques, shoulders, triceps

  1. Start on your hands and knees with the wheel between your arms.
  2. Move your hands to hold on to either side of the wheel on the top of the wheel.
  3. From here, lift your knees off the ground and push up from the wheel into the plank position.
  4. Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

3. Rolling Lunge

Muscles worked: quads, glutes, hamstrings

  1. Stand up with the wheel behind your right foot.
  2. Lift your right leg to place the top of your foot on the wheel.
  3. Slowly roll the wheel backward to lunge down.
  4. Do 3 sets of 10. Repeat on both sides.

Tricep Lift

Muscles worked: triceps, shoulders

  1. Sit, kneel, or stand. Grab the wheel in both hands.
  2. Bend your arms behind your head.
  3. Lift your arms above your head.
  4. Repeat 3 sets of 15.

Chirp Wheel – Final Thoughts

The Chirp Wheel does indeed work as it’s marketed which is to reduce back pain, improve flexibility, and correct posture. I did feel that it helped me with my back pain, especially in the upper back area. It has helped straighten and elongated my spine a little, and yes, you do hear the pops and cracks when using it.

I don’t think the company over-promised, under-delivered, or vice versa. This product is pretty solid and I’m sure it will last a very long time. Even if it breaks, it comes with a 10-year warranty should there be any cracks in the plastic core.

The Chirp Wheel Is Ideal For:

  • Muscle Recovery
  • Target Key Pressure Points
  • Release Muscle Tension and Discomfort
  • Improve Posture
