What is a Dip Bar?
A dip bar is a piece of bodyweight or calisthenics training equipment that consists of two parallel U-shaped bars that support your body weight while you perform a dip. The dip is essentially a movement that involves pushing your body up and down using the strength of your triceps. Dips will allow you to engage your triceps, lower chest, and core muscles like no other movement can, which makes it one of the primary bodyweight movements, along with push-ups, pull-ups and squats.
If you’re looking for the best dip bars for your home workouts, in this article we’ll cover a list of dip bars that you should consider. A set of dip bars is perfect for your home gym setup as they are affordable, easy to set up and will help you build a strong upper body size, strength, and core stability.
Dip bars allow you to do various workouts from pulling and pushing movements. For example, Australian pull-ups target your back, biceps, and forearm muscles. Push-ups and parallel dips target your chest, tricep, and front shoulder muscles.
I’ve made this list based on personal preferences and arranged them based on their features, quality, durability, prices, and customer reviews. Read on to see the top 10 dip bars you can buy from Amazon.
Dip Bar Buyer’s Guide
Dip bars come in all shapes and sizes, some are attached to a tower that allows you to do pull-ups, and leg raises. Mirafit emphasized that dip bars are perfect for varying your strength routine for upper body training by focusing on your tricep, shoulders, chest, and core. Here are the factors to consider when buying a dip bar:
Available Space
Take into account the fact that the space you have available will largely determine the type of dip bar you’ll have at home. If you are working with limited space, it would be best for you to get one without the pull-up bar on top for more flexibility to be stored away so that you can maximize your home gym space.
Stability
To have a stress-free workout, you’ll need dip bars that are sturdy and stable so that they can handle your weight. The frame should not shake or wobble when you are performing various exercises on it. You should consider the rubber feet to not only prevent slipping but also protects the floor.
Versatility
Are you looking to do numerous exercises on your dip bars? According to Men’s Health, power towers are great if you want to do pull-ups, push-ups, dips, and leg raises. The versatility provided by one piece of equipment is more efficient than having five different workout stations to do a variety of exercises. In this review, I give you the top five options for standard dip bars and power towers.
Weight Capacity
Dip bars come in different forms which means they have different maximum weight capacities and they range from 250-500 plus pounds. If you are taller and weigh more, I recommend you get a set of heavy-duty bars to accommodate your frame, whereas smaller users can get away with a smaller pair of dip bars.
Grip and Padding Protection
If you get sweaty hands like me when working out then the grip would be an important factor to consider. A better grip allows you to train without the worry of slipping and putting too much friction onto your palms and skin. These grips should be soft, durable, and won’t be worn down easily after frequent use.
Price and Warranty
Everyone has a different budget when it comes to purchasing your home training equipment, therefore you should always consider your budget to spend before starting your search. This will immediately help you to filter down the best options for your available budget.
Also, a warranty is an important indicator of the company’s product quality. Always check the warranty before your purchase. I suggest you always look for at least a 1-year product warranty, and if it’s longer then that’s a bonus.

Dip Bar Exercises
There are many beginner-friendly variations you can do on the dip bars. This piece of equipment allows you to target different muscle groups during your bodyweight strength training. Below are four great dip bar exercises for beginners.
1. Australian Pull Ups
Dip bars can be used for both pulling and pushing motions which makes them versatile in any workout you do. Australian pull-ups target your back, biceps, shoulders, and core. Here’s how you do it:
- Position yourself below the dip bars grasping the bar using an overhand grip. Extend your arms and body so that your body is at an inclined slope. Brace your core and lower body muscles.
- Pull your chest towards the bar by bending the elbow while keeping your body in a straight line.
- Slowly return back to the starting position.
- Repeat this for 8-10 reps.
For a comprehensive tutorial, read this Australian pull-ups article to learn how to do this exercise with the correct techniques.
2. Parallel Bar Support Holds
The parallel bar support hold will condition your muscles for dips. This is a static hold exercise that will support the stabilization of the joints through the body, which helps to build foundational strength for more dynamic movements.
- Stand in between dip bars and grasp on each side.
- Push down to extend your arms and lift your body upwards, gradually elevate your feet from the ground until your arms are locked out.
- Hold this position for 10-30 seconds.
Isometric exercises are commonly used to improve strength and the muscles’ ability to generate power by changing muscle length. During isometric contractions, your muscles do not shorten or lengthen against resistance. The tension increases but the muscles remain at a constant length.
3. Negative Dips
The next progression towards parallel dips is doing negative dips. This is reversing the movement to develop upper body strength to be able to do a full dip.
- Stand in between dip bars and graps on each side.
- Push down to extend your arms and lift your body upwards, and gradually elevate your feet from the ground until your arms are locked out.
- Bend your elbows and slowly lower your body while keeping your core tight and torso upright. Control this movement as you come down.
- Put your feet down to support your body weight when you reach the bottom range. This is one rep.
- Repeat this for 2-5 reps at a count of 3-5 seconds.
Studies suggest that eccentric exercise may improve movement competency and promote improved safety and performance of sporting tasks. This will also prepare your body for the concentric part of the movement. For example, when your triceps, chest, and shoulders muscles are contracting to push your body up.
4. Deficit Inclined Push Ups
Dip bars are so versatile that they can be used for more than just dips. If you have a tall steel frame, you can use it as a base for incline push-ups with an extended range of motion, meaning you’re able to lower down deeper into the bottom phase to isolate your lower chest more effectively.
- Firmly grasp each side of the parallel bar.
- Walk your feet behind you and extend your arms fully until your body is at an inclined slope.
- Brace your core and glutes to ensure a straight line.
- Lower yourself towards the ground by bending the elbows and keeping them close to your torso.
- Push yourself back to the starting position.
- Repeat this for 5-10 reps.
